I am a photographer, lecturer, tutor and book author based in Surrey. I’d love to be part of your creative journey, and share my passion for photography with you. Seeing the world through a lens, experiencing life and then expressing it through making photographs is one big part of what I do. Another part is sharing my passion with others and helping them to make photographs they are really happy with, and helping them to really embrace photography as a means to channel their creative energy, to engage more deeply and really connect with their surroundings, and to develop their vision, their way of seeing and perceiving the world around them.
Want to hear more about it? Get the VISION CHAT. I publish it when I have something interesting to share, and it’s where we can connect and dig a bit deeper into all things photography. Just tell me where to send it here. Readers of the VISION CHAT are very much involved in compiling its content by sharing their ideas and requests as well as submitting their images and thoughts.
And readers also get TRANSIENCE as a free download. TRANSIENCE is a series of folios I publish together with the VISION CHAT. TRANSIENCE is about something that made me stop and look, and photograph, something that inspired me – it can be anything from a beautiful landscape, a person, a detail on a building, a reflection, or even an interesting manhole cover – anything that moves me in the moment. The folio contains one image, or a small series of images, and a few sentences about my thoughts, motivation and considerations, and perhaps the process behind making the image. It is a reminder that photographs can be made anywhere, of any subject. It can inspire you to adopt a broader view of your photographic vision and expand your repertoire of ways to make photographs.
What else might you want to know?
I started to seriously engage in photography when struggling to juggle the demands of family life, motherhood and a stressful job. Spending time outdoors and photographing became my way of balancing life.
Initially, I photographed almost exclusively landscapes, drawing my inspiration from scenes in the natural world that evoke a sense of tranquillity and harmony. Often, I’d be drawn towards the less obvious details in the landscape - such as shapes, patterns or a particular colour – making them the primary subject of my images. In the last few years, I have become fascinated by street life and architecture and have photographed extensively in cities in the UK and abroad.
I use a variety of techniques to capture my response to a scene and recreate it for the viewer through my photographs, such as long exposure, multiple exposures, camera movement and deliberate defocusing. I love exploring new cultures and feel equally compelled to capture the beautiful evening light by a lakeside, the strong graphic lines and reflections of city architecture or the essence of life and countryside of new locations abroad.
In 2014, I published my first book The Elmbridge Hundred – A Visual Journey, which was a companion piece to a community project about the history and heritage of my local Borough of Elmbridge. I have curated several art exhibitions and judged international photography competitions, such as the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. I teach and lecture on photography, and also work on commissions for individuals and organisations. In 2018, I joined Light & Land, the UK's premier photographic tour company, as a tour leader. My images have been published and widely exhibited in the UK and Europe, including the Mall Galleries and OXO Gallery in London, and the Horizons Photo Festival in Zingst, Germany, and are held in private collections in Europe and the US.
